Great Dictionary.
Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2005My job requires extensive technical writing skills in the form of developing mathematical algorithms or creating presentations or other documentation that frequently requires that mathematical concepts be clearly defined for the reader. Even when you think you know a good definition for a mathematical term, this dictionary will likely give you a better one. Good reference to keep around.
This is perhaps one of the best, if not the best, mathematics dictionary. But it is just that, a dictionary of mathematical terms and phrases. Do no expect it to teach you any subject in mathematics. It would be great for any student taking a mathematics course. If the student runs across a term that he/she might have forgotten, the student can refer to this dictionary for a quick reminder.

Great Reference
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2012One of my favorite reference books, the quality is superb and explanations of terms with noted examples, equations, or drawings is what you would hope to find. Expect price point to fluctuate quite a bit as this book is either out of print or increasingly difficult to find a new copy at a reasonable price. A great reference for all sciences and for high-school or college students that just keep bugging for answers that are either obscure or beyond my personal recollection!

Thorough Coverage of Mathematics
Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2006Well written and edited. Definitions and explanations are clear and to the point. As I flipped through the book, I ran into many, many entries which I did not understand, but in that regard, an unabridged dictionary of the English language has many, many entries in it about which I know nothing.

Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2013The reason I purchased this is for work. It has come in handy and is exactly what I was hoping it would be.

Nice Dictionary
Reviewed in the United States on February 29, 2004I'm yet to find a better maths dictionary. Lots of definitions. Well organized/cross-referenced. As an undergraduate, I'm yet to look up something and be disappointed. Handy tables at the back.
It doesn't get 5 stars because of a few glaring misprints.

Repeatedly a source of annoyance to me
Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2015I have owned a copy of this dictionary for many years, and I also own two other dictionaries of mathematics. In addition to my interest in the field of mathematics generally, I usually approach the subject from viewpoints of mathematical logic, foundations of mathematics (e.g., number theory), or applications of topology. Every time I have needed clarification of a mathematical concept or term and have read definitions in this book, I felt frustrated and somewhat angry.
I accept that the authors' approach to the subject might be exactly what is needed by some readers (as evidenced by the positive reviews on Amazon). One reviewer wrote, "Do no expect it to teach you any subject in mathematics," and I do not have such expectation. But, I own dozens of dictionaries about diverse subjects and in several languages; from a lifetime of using dictionaries I find that editors or authors bring to the subject (a) their particular comprehension of the material, and (b) an ability to convey knowledge effectively (or lack thereof). Another reviewer on Amazon wrote, "When a scientist or author needs to compose text about these operations, a reference work with concise and precise definitions of terms and concepts is indispensable." Perhaps, that is the gist of my problem with this book. The authors seem to presume of the reader something akin to initiation into a Pythagorean gnosis cult; by that I mean, the definitions given may pass for literal meanings, but they do not impart much understanding that one doesn't already possess. My trouble with this book was made worse by my having found (in the 1991 edition that I own) some definite errors, such as I have not found in any other of the dozens of dictionaries I own.
For my purposes I have had gotten better quality help from The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Mathematics (Oxford Paperback Reference), although it has the limitation of being a small book. The best mathematics dictionary I have seen (in my opinion) was priced well over $100, and I simply couldn't afford it. Of course, free resources on the Web somewhat obviate the need for a printed dictionary, but sometimes I find it more convenient to use a book.
I give this book 2 stars because it is slightly better than nothing, if it were all that I had.

Good reference, but an amazing toilet reading material!
Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2004If you're anything like me, you enjoy reading while in the toilet, doing one of the necessities of human nature, this reference has a great "random open" feature, where you can just slide your thumb at any page and find an interesting term you can think and learn about, I dont know how much the shallow discussion to these complex terms is really useful, but it gives you interesting things to think about, it also contains some mathematics history and some information about famous mathematicians, the paperback cover provides for some nice comfortable format, this dictionary has replaced the old Almanac I used to open randomly when I'm bored.
A 5 star for the cuteness.
Enjoy.

Better tnan a textbook!
Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2007I teach math in high school, and I have found this dictionary more useful than the textbook. The definitions are more precise and understandable than in a book designed to be understandable. It's compact, lightweight (because it's paperback) yet it's packed with information. It has been one of my better purchases this year.
