RIP glitch

* skip to the directory *

on may 22, 2025, there was an announcement about important changes coming to glitch:

We’ve got an important update for the Glitch community today: We’ll be ending web hosting for your apps on Glitch. In this message, we’ll explain what that means for you and for the Glitch community.

On July 8, 2025 Glitch project hosting and user profiles will be shut down. Your Glitch dashboard will remain available as usual through the end of 2025, with access to download all of your code for your projects, as well as a new feature to set up redirects for your project subdomains so your URLs keep working.

i'm sad. the closure of any host is a loss for the web, but losing glitch is especially painful because of the creative community it cultivated. the live editor made coding approachable for beginners and students, whose sites are some of my favorites. (they're also the ones i'm most worried about not being backed up...) so many sites on glitch seemed to be made just to try out an idea or have fun. there was a remix button! i'll remember glitch as a place built around generosity, experimentation, and play.

i'm also frustrated. i didn't even get the email! i checked my spam folder, other accounts, and nothing. i only found out about the shutdown because i happened to make a forum post last week, so i was logging in to look for replies. admittedly, even if i did get the email, i probably would have skipped over it. "important changes" in a subject line is vague enough to be meaningless to me, lost in the sea of other corporate emails i ignore. on the forum, the pinned post is "Project Hosting Ending July 8", which tells me everything i need to know in only five words! in a less frustrating world, this would have been the subject line of the email announcement and blog post too. given the communication issues, how is everyone who wants to move their sites elsewhere meant to do it before they go offline in just six weeks?

i wasn't planning to write anything for the indieweb carnival on small web communities, but the glitch news forced my hand. the work of countless creative web communities is at risk of being lost, and i want to do what i can to preserve their history. over the past few days, i've been saving glitch sites to the wayback machine and adding those archived links to this page. i'm focusing on code jams, classes, and other sites made as a part of a community. i'll keep adding to the directory until i run out of time, and i'll start checking for redirects once that's set up on glitch.

okay, it's time for the links.

sections: glitch code jams, sunday sites, httpoetics

✅ = moved to a new URL
❌ = not functional (still linked so you can peep the source)

if i've listed a site that you made, you can email me to have the link updated or removed.

glitch code jams

code jams were the reason i was on glitch, so i want to thank jenn schiffer for all the work that she put into hosting them. recordings of her weekly livestreams can be found on youtube, with the run-of-show for each stream archived on jams-live.glitch.me.

glitch playlists display as blank pages on the wayback machine, so i've transcribed each month's list here.

spooky cookies, october 2024

It happens everyday. A friend sends you a link to something you want to read, but as the site loads, a chill runs down your spine. The cookies attack! Accept all, a button tells you. Decline all, Save my preferences, or the dreaded vagueness of a “Preferences” button. No matter where you go on the internet, these confusing UI patterns are sure to haunt you and so in the spirit of the season, we want to see your interpretations of “spooky cookies!” 👻🍪
