'I'm worried I've doomed my daughter for life with her unique baby name'
A mum-to-be is second guessing her decision to give her unborn daughter a unique name, as although she 'loves' the name she chose, she thinks she might be 'dooming' her child
Settling on a baby name is never a straightforward task. Even when you've landed on a name you absolutely adore, there are still factors to weigh up to make sure you're not making a costly error - such as unwittingly saddling your child with a name that lends itself to an unpleasant nickname.
Many parents opt to seek a second opinion from family or friends on their chosen name. However, as one mum-to-be discovered on social media, that might not be the wisest move if you're still on the fence, as other people's views could leave you having second thoughts altogether.
In a post on Reddit, the expectant mum revealed that she and her husband had come up with a unique name for their baby girl, but despite loving it herself, she's now worried she may have "doomed" her child with a moniker that's tricky to pronounce.
She said: "I'm having a girl, and nobody has said anything about the name being weird, yet I just want to make sure I'm not dooming my poor kid. Me and the dad chose Araya (uh-ray-uh) with the middle name Avery, is this bad??"
Commenters largely told the mum that while the name isn't "bad", many found it "clunky" alongside the middle name, and felt the parents would forever be explaining the correct pronunciation to people.
One person said: "It's not terrible, but you'll definitely always be explaining how to pronounce it." Another added: "I really, really dislike it. It's so clunky with Avery, too. Any chance you can go with Avery and find another middle name?"
A third commented: "The fact that you had to explain how to pronounce it tells us it's not a good name."
Numerous people in the comments who struggled with the pronunciation pointed out they would naturally assume Araya is either a variation of Aria (pronounced Ah-ree-uh) or Ariah (pronounced Ar-eye-uh).
Yet, since the parents indicated they preferred the "ray" sound in the middle rather than "eye", many felt the name would prove too confusing.
The mum subsequently returned to her post to add an update after reading feedback about the pronunciation, revealing that she'd initially wanted it pronounced "Ar-eye-uh", but shifted her thinking after family and friends said they'd instinctively pronounce it "Ah-ray-uh".
She wrote: "I'm seeing the general consensus is that it'll be mispronounced, and the middle name sounds clunky with it. Would like to say it originally was going to be pronounced (are-eye-uh), but funnily enough, the first group of people we texted about it thought it was pronounced the way we settled on!".
"I also thought because it's three standalone (a)s, with no (i)s or (e)s, most people would read it as (ay) instead of (eye) because (a) by itself doesn't make that sound phonetically."
The woman also mentioned she'd head back to the drawing board to hunt for a more appropriate middle name, though acknowledged there'd be limited flexibility with the first name as her husband is "pretty set" on the Araya spelling.
She went on to say: "I think I'll workshop the middle name again, but the dad is pretty set on the spelling for the first name, it's a mix of both of our first names, and the only one of the mixes we tried that didn't stand out to me as letter vomit. (Are-eye-uh) does sound good with the last name at least, thankfully."
