Gardai issue fresh appeal for information 15 years after road death of Fintan Traynor

15 years ago, 20-year-old Fintan Traynor was killed in a hit-and-run collision in Co Monaghan

Gardai have issued a fresh appeal for information 15 years on from the tragic road death of Fintan Traynor in Co Monaghan.

Today, Friday June 26 2026, marks the 15th anniversary since Fintan was killed in a hit-and-run collision in Lemgare, Clontibret in Monaghan.

Tragic Fintan lost his life in the early hours of Sunday, June 26 2011, as he was walking home following a night out in Castleblayney. He was struck by a car on the Lemgare Road, which links the villages of Clontibret and Annyalla with Derrynoose and Keady in Co Armagh.

The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and also fled the scene.

Gardai are of the belief that the vehicle involved in the collision was an Audi A4 and a model between the date range of 1996-2001. This is because Gardai subsequently recovered the front lower portion of the grille of such a vehicle at the scene of the road tragedy.

The Garda probe remains active and Gardai have explored more than 400 leads over the past decade and a half but the vehicle and driver have yet to be located.

Gardai have now issued a new appeal for information.

"I am appealing to the public that if they have any information to please come forward," Detective Inspector Adrian Durcan of the Monaghan Garda District said.

"With the passage of time, now perhaps someone may feel more comfortable coming forward with information in relation to this matter. Do you know someone who may have had damage to an Audi car around this period? Did someone confide in you?

"In 15 years loyalties, friendships and relationships change and perhaps now you are in a position to provide the investigation team with the vital information that would locate the vehicle and driver."

Anyone with any information that could assist with the investigation is urged to contact Monaghan Garda Station on 047 77200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
