A 'gory' action thriller that is said to be perfect for Pulp Fiction fans is now streaming.
The title has recently been added to Prime Video and fans are urged that it is something they should be making plans to watch. Despite very little fanfare surrounding its release on the platform it is quickly becoming one of the most watched titles among subscribers.
At the time of writing, the film, is currently the fourth most watched film or series on Prime Video. It only sits behind new releases Malice, Playdate and After the Hunt.
According to its synopsis, Freaky Tales follows an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teenage punks, neo-Nazis and a debt collector who all embark on a collision course in 1987 Oakland, California. The film's plot depicts four interconnected stories taking place at real locations and during real historical events in 1987.
The way these different stories come together has gained comparison to Quentin Tarantino's classic Pulp Fiction. Much like that release, the cast of Freaky Tales include some of the biggest names in film and television.
This includes Star Wars actor Ben Mendelsohn and The Last of Us and The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal. Joining them are former NFL player Marshawn Lynch and even Tom Hanks.
It was written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The filmmaking duo have previously made episodes of The Big C and Masters of the Air as well as helming Captain Marvel as part of the MCU.
Many critics have wondered why more people have not been made more aware of the film's recent streaming release. Specialised website Film Stories, even penned a piece complaining that main streamers are not doing enough to market releases.
The piece claims: "Freaky Tales is like a cross between the interlocking tales of Pulp Fiction and the retro aesthetic of another Tarantino-derived joint, Grindhouse."
Another reviewer added that they believed the underrated film contains one of the best performances of one of Hollywood's biggest stars. They penned: "This short yet unforgettable scene, which legitimately caught me by surprise, is not the most consequential of this action flick that everyone should be watching, but it does provide a key moment."
They added: "This is honestly one of the best Tom Hanks performances in a long time. He’s quick-witted, funny, and just so dang mysterious. The two-time Academy Award winner looks like he was having the time of his life behind the desk, and I had just as much fun watching it."
Many fans have also shared their recommendations. One person posted online saying: "Wow. Just WOW. This movie was a blast from start to finish! Everyone brought their A-game to their roles, and let me just say, this is what CINEMA looks like. If you’re a fan of high-octane storytelling, imagine Kill Bill but on steroids, that’s Freaky Tales.
"It delivers action, gore, and yes, surprisingly, a lot of heart. The anthology format might throw you at first, but trust me it works. Each piece connects in a way that’s so clever and satisfying. You’ll want to keep your eyes glued to the screen, because everything comes full circle by the end. It’s one of those films where the more you watch, the more you catch.."
Another added: "Great movie from the nostalgic 80s. If you want a different kind of movie full of excitement and craziness, watch this! It is wild! Like an old Stephen King movie with a twist!"
Someone else responded: "One of the best movies I’ve seen in awhile. It’s well done and entertaining. Love how the movie wraps up and each chapter and how it all comes together at the end."
Freaky Tales is streaming on Prime Video.
