Cyclist caught pedalling on M6 Toll after 'following Google Maps'

A cyclist was removed by police from the M6 Toll road before dawn, after several motorists called 999 to report him riding without lights

A bewildered cyclist who blindly trusted his sat nav ended up on a motorway and was stopped by police after they discovered him pedalling through the darkness without any lights.

Astonished officers came across him on the M6 Toll road in the early hours of Monday morning, January 19, following multiple 999 calls from concerned motorists.

The cyclist, equipped with a chunky-tyred bike and sporting a black rucksack, explained to Staffordshire Police that he'd simply been following Google Maps when questioned about his motorway misadventure.

To add to the situation, his bicycle had no lights fitted despite the dim conditions. Officers revealed he'd cycled past numerous exit points without cottoning on to the fact he shouldn't have been on the carriageway at all, reports Birmingham Live.

Staffordshire Police's Road Crime Team 3 shared: "This morning we received multiple calls about this chap merrily riding down the M6 Toll road on his cycle.

"Not only did he join the motorway because Google Maps said he should. But (he) had no lights on, and even once realising what he told us was his mistake, passed several junctions where he could have exited.

"Male and cycle removed from the motorway network and reported for the offence."
