Woman dies in horror M62 crash after 'driving in wrong direction'

The M62 in Greater Manchester is closed this morning after a horror crash killed a woman in her 50s late last night

A woman has died in a horror crash on a major motorway after reportedly "driving in the wrong direction".

Emergency services raced to the scene on the M62, in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, to reports of a crash at around 11pm on Saturday (July 11).

A grey Nissan Juke collided with a grey BMX X5 between Junction 21 and 22 on the eastbound carriageway of the motorway, which remains closed this morning. Sadly, a woman in her 50s was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is believed the Nissan driver was "driving in the wrong direction down the carriageway" when it collided with the BWM, Greater Manchester Police has said in a statement.

While the woman suffered serious injuries, the driver and the passengers of the BMW were treated for minor injuries. No arrests have been made at this time, the force has said, but an investigation has been launched.

Officers from GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are now appealing to members of the public to help with their enquiries.

They are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from the area in the moments leading up to the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 4741 quoting log 4349 of 11/07/2026.
