Flight attendant says passengers do 1 thing in plane loos that 'horrifies her'

A flight attendant has admitted passengers do something in plane loos that "totally disgusts her". Gemma Sophie opened up about the matter as it bothers her so much

We don't always realise just how much flight attendants know when it comes to travelling, as they often offer handy advice on the top ways to travel and the best outfits to wear on planes too. However, one flight attendant has recently drawn attention to a rather grim topic, which is plane loos and what happens inside them.

Gemma Sophie recently offered a travel tip in a TikTok video, as she said there are some things that really horrify her when it comes to air travel. If you're someone who considers yourself a super clean person, you may want to take note, as it might change the way you travel forever.

It's not the first time a flight attendant has shared handy travel advice either. Previously, another also admitted there's a certain reason they greet you on planes, and it's not to be polite.

Over a clip of herself, she detailed her "five top icks" as a flight attendant, and one of them involves the toilets. Among her top horror stories at work were people being sick in the sink, nappies being changed in the cabin and making an emergency call by accident.

However, she also detailed that something else is considered totally disgusting. She wrote: "People using plane lavatories with no shoes on."

The clip has since been viewed thousands of times, and it got a lot of people chatting too. One said: "Stop talking about my nightmares."

Another added: "No shoes in the toilets actually kills me. The floor is ALWAYS wet."

Many admitted the shoe confession "hits them hard", as they can't believe people do it. In the comments, Gemma also noted it's something that happens "way too often".

What you need to know

While many people may do it for comfort, you should never use a plane toilet without wearing shoes. Flight attendants and health experts advise against it because the liquid on the floor is often bodily fluids (such as urine, vomit or blood) rather than just water.

This can pose significant hygiene and infection risks. The lavatory floor is considered highly unhygienic, holding bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Not to mention, the "mysterious liquid" on the floor is rarely just water. There are other things to be considered too.

For example, if there were ever an emergency evacuation, you need shoes to safely navigate debris. This is another reason why it's always best to keep them on.

If you really want to take your shoes off to be more comfortable, you could always take slippers or disposable shoe covers to travel. You can use them to walk around the cabin and use the bathroom.

It's something that's definitely worth taking note of. After all, nobody wants their feet to be covered in germs.
