Elon Musk claims X hit by 'massive cyberattack' after site goes down for third time

Elon Musk has claimed that a “massive cyberattack” put in place by a “coordinated group and/or a country” caused a wave of X outages on Monday

Elon Musk has said that the social media site X was hit with a “massive cyberattack” on Monday that is still ongoing, suggesting that a “coordinated group and/or a country” was responsible after a number of outages.

At around 9:30am on Monday, a spike in issues with the site and app was reported from around the world, with users being left unable to access their usual feed of memes and news.

At around 11:30am, about two hours after the outage, X services were seemingly restored, with accounts reporting being able to access the social media site once again but this was short lived as the site would be hit with another outage hours later.

Just under 40,000 reports flooded Downdetector during the second outage at around 2pm, with the third peaking at slightly less with just 24,798 reports at around 6pm.

Elon Musk, who has owned the social media site since 2022, wrote that while the site is attacked every day, this time, many resources were employed.

“There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X,” Elon Musk wrote on the platform.

“We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved.”

It is unknown who is responsible for the alleged cyber attack, although Mirror US reports that a group known as the "Dark Storm Team" hackers have claimed responsibility for the attack in a public Telegram post.

The group is known for their sophisticated cyber warfare attacks and successful attacks on high-security systems.

The group reportedly vowed in a post last month to unleash a wave of cyberattacks on the government websites of NATO countries, Israel and nations that support Israel.
