Imagine a chart without a title, no labels, and no visual clues to what it is about – how much would you be able to understand? 📝 Without a doubt, text is one of the most crucial elements of data visualization.

Simple but effective, slope charts have a number of great uses: ranging from visualizing changes that occur over time to ranking by values 📈 👉 Click here to read the full help doc about slope charts and when to use them: help.flourish.studio/article/392-sl… #DataVisualization #Data
Graphic with title "Basics of slope" and a chart explaining the basic elements of the slope chart: the axes, the lines to represent the series, the steepness of the lines and their direction, and their thickness.
Graphic with text "What are slopes good for? Identifying and showing change or variance in a simplified manner, quickly spotting trends, and comparing data between two years". Slope chart in rank mode showing the international wage gap between men and women in 2018, 2019 and 2020 with South Korea ranking first on all three years.
Graphic with title "Three modes" showing three slope charts representing old production data for the years 2000 and 2019. Left: slope chart in score mode. Middle: slope chart in rank mode. Right: slop chart in percent change mode.
Graphic with title "Slope v. Line charts" and text "These are sister charts, but have different use cases. Similarities: both can represent time series, every line is a series, time is on X axis and values on Y axis. Differences: slopes work better with less series, slopes can show percent change and ranks, slopes don't need a zero base." Beside, images of slope chart and line chart.

Imagine a chart without a title, no labels, and no visual clues to what it is about – how much would you be able to understand? 📝 Text is one of the most crucial elements of #DataVisualization. With this in mind, we've provided a few useful tips about using text in your charts.
Graphic containing a sankey diagram showing how food is disposed of with descriptive title: "Most UK food ends up in landfills or incinerators" below, text: "Since graphs do not contain much text, existing text must be concise and effective. A 6-12 word descriptive title is enough. You can also use colors in the header – read more in our help docs"
Graphic containing a zoomed in portion of the previous sankey, highlighting the labels on the chart. text: "Position labels as closely to the graph as possible, so eye movement between the legend and the data is minimized." Below, an image of an area chart that has a drop in the data highlighted with a text annotation. Text: "Add annotations to answer a viewer's questions or to emphasize specific data points."
A graphic containing two screenshots of the same chart. One is labeled "don'ts" with text: "The separate legend makes this area chart hard to read, while the axis formatting contributes to the jammed look of the visualization." The other chart is labeled "Dos" with text: "Use labels instead of a legend. You can also replace zeros with suffixes on the axes using the Number formatting settings."
Graphic with title: "Did you know?" below, text: "You can find many useful Flourish settings that can help you create a stunning chart. Here are some in the “Line, bar, pie” template!" with screenshots of Flourish labels settings "A great alternative to the ordinary legend", legend settings "Automatically recognize and color words from the header", number formatting settings "You can format your axes under the Advanced settigns" and annotation settings "Add highlights to your axes"
