Summary

For relocatable virtual environments, the generated activate.fish derived
VIRTUAL_ENV using Bash-style $(...) command substitution:

set -gx VIRTUAL_ENV ''"$(dirname -- "$(cd "$(dirname -- "$(status -f)")"; and pwd)")"''

This had two problems on Fish:

Syntax error on Fish before 3.4. Fish only added $(...) command substitution in 3.4. On older releases — which the rest of the activation script still supports via its FISH_VERSION < 3 guards. This makes uv venv --relocatable unusable under Fish < 3.4: the script can't even be parsed.
Sourcing changed the caller's working directory. Unlike Bash, Fish's (...) / $(...) substitution does not run in a subshell, so the cd in the expression changed the directory of the shell that sourced the script.

Both are fixed by switching to Fish-native (...) substitution and using realpath instead of the cd trick, which works across all supported Fish versions and leaves the caller's directory untouched:

Test plan

Updated verify_pyvenv_cfg_relocatable to assert the new Fish-native form is generated. Verified end-to-end on Fish 3.3.1 that, with the fix, uv venv --relocatable produces an activate.fish that:

sources cleanly (previously a hard syntax error),
resolves VIRTUAL_ENV to the venv root, including after relocating the venv directory, and
no longer changes the sourcing shell's working directory.

This seems fine to me, although Fish 3.4 was released half a decade ago (2021). I think maybe we'd be better off enforcing 3.4+ anyways, since we're not testing for (or intending support for) much older versions of Fish.

I'd gently push back on framing this purely as old-version support. The change isn't really a compatibility workaround — $(...) is Bash syntax that just happens to also parse on Fish 3.4+, whereas (...) is the native, idiomatic Fish form. So switching to (...) is "using the correct syntax" rather than "adding support for old Fish"; broader version compatibility is just a side effect.
Worth noting the rest of the activation script still carries FISH_VERSION < 3 guards, so the codebase already implies support for older Fish in other places — this change is actually more internally consistent, not less.

This is a match statement full of different shells' interpretations of the same thing, so explaining that fish has its own syntax doesn't add anything. Drop this comment.

As far as I can tell realpath and dirname are not builtins in 3.3 (or the latest version), and so, since realpath gets passed the output of status --current-filename, and this could be a relative path, it needs --. It's technically not required for the two dirname invocations because they should always be getting passed an absolute path, but I'd like you to keep -- there too anyway. When I read this code I don't want to have to think about whether they need it or not.

I notice you've switched this away from the cd trick, which is fine because we seem to have also done that for the bash/zsh/ksh polyglot at some point. But, since fish doesn't use a subshell for () (or $()), the cd trick also meant that this script would change your directory if you sourced it. So you've actually fixed a bug there and I'd like you to document this in your PR description.

Done — added -- to realpath and both dirname invocations. Good point on status -f potentially yielding a relative path; kept -- on the dirname calls too so there's nothing to reason about when reading it.
