We observed what appears to be a collision between ArchiveIds in https://github.com/astral-sh/ruff/actions/runs/27950213732/job/82705000710?pr=26198. This may happen if two processes installing the same package are started at exactly the same time, which is plausible in the ruff test suite. Using a secure RNG prevents this.

Hmm, something doesn't fully make sense here -- even if two processes were started at the exact same instant, fastrand's global seed should include a unique thread ID for each:

Switching to the CSPRNG seems fine though. We could probably remove insecure entirely, IIRC this was the only use of it 🙂

Edit: this might be a bug in fastrand -- Thread::id doesn't guarantee a 1-1 correspondence with OS-level thread IDs, which would provide that kind of per-process isolation on Linux. In other words normally you'd have pid=123 tid=123 and pid=124 tid=124 but Rust allows something like pid=123 tid=0, pid=124, tid=0 instead. I'll test that.

This thread id is relative to the process, not relative to the OS, for example fn main() { println!("{:?}", std::thread::current().id()); } prints ThreadId(1) on my mac.

Yeah, I just realized I was thinking of kernel TIDs, not pthread_t or Rust's equivalent. I expected the stdlib to use TIDs but it makes sense they don't 🙂

(I think this is potentially still a bug in fastrand, but either way it's something we should be resilient to...)
