Summary

Stacked on #19933.

#19933 omits dependency markers that are true throughout the configured environment, but a conditional dependency still repeats that environment in full. For example, an edge represented internally as <environment> and python_version < '3.11' writes the complete environment marker instead of only the Python-version condition.

This adds general marker simplification under an assumption to the marker algebra. Lock serialization simplifies each dependency marker under the resolution environment, while deserialization conjoins that environment again to restore the marker's standalone meaning. This lets us persist the residual condition without changing behavior inside the supported environment.

Note that in the literature this is known as a restrict operation. We already have a version of this right above, but it is limited to the truthiness of a single variable, as opposed to an arbitrary marker tree. That could probably be removed entirely now.

I'm not sure this branch is correct. If the value is independent of the assumption variable, we don't just want to choose an arbitrary branch of the assumption to use for simplification. If the assumption has multiple non-false branches, this can lead to us including the assumption as part of the simplified marker, e.g., simplifying python_version >= '3.12' under sys_platform == 'linux' or python_version >= '3.12' on your branch produces sys_platform != 'linux' or python_version >= '3.12', a more complex marker than the original. I think what we want to do here is instead existentially quantify away the unnecessary variable.

Tried both on a real lockfile (~360 packages, 4 conflicting dependency-group forks, py3.12) with:

environments = ["sys_platform == 'linux' and platform_machine == 'x86_64' and implementation_name == 'cpython'"]

On 0.11.20, setting environments grows the lock from 893,633 to 3,388,543 bytes, even though wheels drop from 1,085 to 459. Rebuilt from source (0.11.23) and re-locked:
