This adds a /api/v1/status/self_metrics endpoint that allows the frontend to fetch metrics about the server itself, making it easier to construct frontend pages that show the current server state. This is needed because fetching metrics from its own /metrics endpoint would be both hard to parse and also require CORS permissions on that endpoint (for cases where the frontend dashboard is not the same origin, at least).

This is inspired by my comment at https://github.com/prometheus/prometheus/pull/18388/changes#r3014741097, wondering whether we want to have this kind of generic self-metrics endpoint, which would make it easy to build frontend pages that show Prometheus' own metric state, without having to do subsystem-specific duplication of metrics into API endpoints / Go types, etc.

Interesting idea actually 🤔 Though it would still not solve filtering (for only getting those metrics that are relevant to a specific frontend page), or wanting to use the UI with a different origin server, unless you also set CORS headers. And maybe that's also too much special-case fiddling with the /metrics endpoint that is only needed for the Prometheus server's own UI?

Oh, good to know! Though it's a bit limiting to only be able to filter by entire metric names rather than prefixes or regexes (which one of the PR comments mentions). I think that would make this feature less useful for a whole UI page where you want to show many metric names that share a prefix.

But I was thinking more about using that representation for your new metrics endpoint, not re-using /metrics.

Ah yes, that would get rid of the custom conversion code. I've pushed another commit that does the following:

Use ProtoJSON, but still wrap it in our usual API JSON wrapper so it works with our standard API access layer in TypeScript.
Use a regex-based filter parameter instead of a prefix filter.

The main downside with the ProtoJSON is that it's more verbose and cumbersome to use, compare:

Yeah, that part would be covered automatically by the ProtoJSON implementation, right? Since the protobuf definition already has the fields for it: https://github.com/prometheus/client_model/blob/07fb8419a45ae561c1c77589431f68cc93c953b7/io/prometheus/client/metrics.proto#L79-L111

So that would be another argument for it. Otherwise we have to add more custom conversion code for that as well.

Note: the TypeScript definitions in selfMetrics.ts still have to mirror the exact protobuf definition at https://github.com/prometheus/client_model/blob/master/io/prometheus/client/metrics.proto if we want to have type-safe access from TypeScript. I just added some missing fields to it to be complete as well.

Do you mean the metric_name_pattern HTTP parameter, or something else? I think we'll need that because we don't know yet which metrics the UI will need in the future (the idea is for this endpoint to be a flexible way for the UI to get any metrics, making other self-dashboards easier as well).

Rework the remote write status page to consume the generic /api/v1/status/self_metrics endpoint (merged in prometheus#18411) instead of a custom Go backend. This removes all server-side code (RemoteWriteStatuser interface, /status/remote_write handler, storage/remote/status.go) and builds the page purely from prometheus_remote_storage_* metric families returned by self_metrics. The frontend groups metrics by remote_name + url labels to reconstruct per-queue status cards with health, delay, shard, pending, sent/failed/ retried counters, and bytes sent.
